Tribute to Sanjeev Kumar

Sanjeev Kumar (July 9, 1938 – November 6, 1985) was one of the most prominent Indian actors in Bollywood movies. He was born Harihar Jariwala to a Gujarati family living in Mumbai. A stint in film school took him to Bollywood, where he eventually became a star (source: Wikipedia).

When Sanjeev Kumar's name come up, many fantastic movies comes to mind: Sangharsh, Andhi, Angoor, Shatranj ke Khiladi, Sholay, and Trishol. And who could ever forget his so heartbreaking, yet realistic acting in the movie "Khilona"! The movie had "Filmfare Awards" written all over it. Director Chander Vohra received Filmafare Best Movie Award. Mumtaz won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. It earned Filmfare nominations for Best Actor - Sanjeev Kumar, Best Comic - Jagdeep, Best Story - Gulshan Nanda, and Best Male Playback Singer - Mohd. Rafi, for the title song "Khilona Jaan Kar".

I present to you "Khilona Jaan Kar". I hope you will enjoy this rendition.

Kya baat hai! So much feelings, so much expressions, felt like the sadness (and as Paras said, helplessness) was oozing out of your heart. Your murkhis are always so accurate, especially the timings. Recording was crisp as a fall morning breeze.
Observations: The first "Ho-o-o", shouldn't it be "O-o-o"? Also, were you wearing a 'smile' (instead of being 'sad'), while singing "Jaan Kar" and "Haal Mein"?
Can you please sing more often??? "Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil" next please!!! Dying to hear that song in your voice.

Asim Da & Paras,

You both mentioned "O-o-o..." instead of "Ho-o-o.." and you are absolutely right. Often, with songs like these, I record spontaneously, out of sheer inspiration and excitement, and without making the usual preparations that I do before recording a song. And hence, the difference! Antaras also are not in the same order as I sang this from memory! Thanks to Paras for observing that antaras are out of order.

You are also right on about the smile on "Jaan kar". I am actually amazed that you could pick it up just by listening. I did have a tough time getting into the sad mood in some portions of the song.

Azam,
"Khilona Jaan Kar" One of my favorite from Rafi Sahab's song and you have sung it so nicely to match the original (keeping all that melancholic expressions and feel intact) I just love it!

I simply adore your "Rafi" renditions which you depict with ease which is very commendable. Very Nice!
Now what's next! Waiting in anticipation.

A very good song selection as usual...This movie was made in tamil as well with the hero -the great Sivaji Ganesan and the songs were damn popular...

I loved the expressions..and the way you have especially sung "Chand Raaton ka" and "Majboor hoon" with such striking clarity leaves me at a lack of words...Great work :)

Dinesh bhai,
What's next! You would not believe it but I myself do not know! I had not planned for this post either, but then I found an excuse to do that. I will tell you though which songs I am anxious to record, besides what is aleady in works:

- Ye Dunya Ye Mehfil (by Asim Da)
- Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho (by you)
- Pukaarta Chala Hun Main (Paras & Ramesh)
- And a 100 more :D

Alright! I know I have not answered your question properly. My apologies!

Sudhathee,
Thanks for the information you provided! So, was there any similar songs in that movie? Who were the singers? I am curious now :)

Azam bhai,

Bahoth khoobh gaya apne is gaaney ko, I especially like the murkhis during the antara, its hard to replicate any song of Rafi saab, aur unkey gaanon ke master hai. Magar mujhe laga ke "Jaan Kar" shabd thodha aur feel se gathey tho bahuth accha hotha.

Azam,

“Bahot Khoob”! You have sung this song very effectively . The “dard” in your voice was quite moving. As much as your versatility has impressed me, I must say that you are at your best when you sing Rafi Sahab’s songs with amazing similarity.

As always, looking forward to listening to more of your songs. - Mala

Saqib, what's going on? How are things? Thanks for listening and commenting, my friend.

RK, aap ka dil khush hua to samjhain hamari mehnat wusool huee. Thanks!

Dhiraj, Thanks for your suggestions and comments! I agree some of the pronunciations of "Jaan Kar" was done "wearing a smile" as Asim Da correctly observed. I could have done it in a different way.

Nandita, thanks a bunch for your encouragement.

Mala, your support and encouragement means a lot. Thank you very much!

Abi, welcome to the blog! I have noted your suggestion. Thanks for your encouragement.

Rajesh, Thank you very much! "Wo Hain Zara" is already on my list. I am hoping to get to it eventually.

Manoaj bhai, aap ne likha, aap ka shukria! Kahan ghayab hain? Thanks for your comments.

Kashif, I would request you to not run out of words. In fact, do some service to the language and invent a few words ;). Shukr hai aap ne ye nahin kaha "Aane do ustaad, double aaay" warna main uchchal kar aik paaon pe kursi pe khada ho jata. Thank you for your comments!

Azam, This song reminded me of some really good times. Really, you did a fantastic job on this.

I am going to have to watch the movie again now. Better, you should convince Kashman and Rubina to act on this song and make a video. Lots of resemblance between Kash and Great Sanjeev Kumar :-)

Deblina, thanks so much for lisening and your comments!

Tipu bhai, acting to aap bhi buri nahin karte. 50/50 ka skit for D-day is the recorded proof of your versatility in acting as well as singing! I think we should start a local film production :D ... alright, I am going to stop now.
Thanks for listening to the song!

Shantha, love your slogan - "Keep singing ... me listening"! For the one on the receiving end, there is much more comfort in it than meets the eye! Thank you for listening :)

Khan Sahab..Sorry for the late reply..Yes..the movie was a remake in every sense..but the tunes for the songs were different. The tamil equivalent for this song is "Naan unnai azhaikavillai" sung by the legend singer T.M Soundararajan. Please listen to it when you have time..its a nice song!

Beautifully sung...as always, you manage to get the emotions of a deep song to come out by way of your voice, which takes the listening pleasure to another level. I see you are getting requests to sing more songs, and I agree. Keep them coming :)
